Maya Resist

This month for Mon Scrapbook, I got to work with a new product from Maya Road - Maya Resist. (Cette chronique est disponible en français chez Mon Scrapbook - ici). This is a liquid product for making your own masks, to be used with inks, paints, sprays, etc. It can be used on cardstock, patterned paper, and fabric such as the canvas mini albums from Maya Road.

Note - this product contains latex, so be careful if you have latex allergies.

It has a needle fine tip. In fact, the cap contains a needle to keep the tip from clogging between uses. Be sure to re-cap the bottle quickly after use, as it already started to clog in the few minutes I was taking these pictures. The product dries quickly.

The ultra fine tip allows for very detailed work, and can be used with small templates.

When first applied, the product has an opaque light blue colour:

And within 10 minutes it dries to a darker, more translucent blue.

Once the product is dry, you can begin to have fun with colour!

When your colour is dry, you can peel off the mask:

You'll notice that it didn't remove perfectly from this sample. I discovered that the Maya Resist really absorbed into the fabric, making it very hard to remove in places. I recommend if you want to use this on fabric, coat it first with a sealant.

On this sample, I first coated the fabric with Ranger Multi Medium (which dries clear and matte). The mask came off very easy for this one.

You can see different colours revealed here. To get this look, create your first mask, add colour, add another mask, then more colour. You can create layers with different colour combinations.

With this sample, I started by coating the fabric with acrylic paint:

Although I used Glimmer Mist with these first samples, you are not limited to using sprays with Maya Resist. You can use inks, paints, and pretty much any other colouring medium you may have in your scrapbooking supplies.

For this next sample, I used kraft cardstock, and Distress Ink. There are a couple of shades, because I did it in layers.

And this is with acrylic paint:

Notice with the Distress Ink sample and the paint sample, the cardstock looks torn. I discovered that the ink wasn't completely dry when I applied the Maya Resist, and it seemed to allow the product to penetrate further into the cardstock, making it hard to remove.

I highly recommend testing the Maya Resist on scraps (or even the back of your project) before going ahead with your designs. It works better with some papers than others.

It worked amazingly well on the textured Bazzill cardstock:

Another fun way to use the Maya Resist is with acrylic (or transparencies) and alcohol inks, which would make it ideal for use with acrylic mini-albums.

I hope this inspires you to try out the new Maya Resist!

OK - My favorite tools? Distressing tools. I use one or the other of these two on every single project!

For thick paper and cardstock, I prefer the Tim Holtz edge distressor:

For thinner papers, I prefer the Heidi Swapp edge distressor:

I love a grundgy, distressed look on my projects, and these two tools help me achieve that look. So - tell me - what's your favorite tool?

Artists @ Work

This is my 3rd layout using the May kit from Snobby Walrus Paper Crafts. There were lots of great papers in the kit, making it very easy to create. I'm a total paper hog, so I love having lots of options. The quote at the top was cut from one of the vintage postcards in the kit. I almost felt a little guilty cutting it - the hand written message on the back was so sweet - a young man writing to his sweetheart a hundred years ago!

I wanted to try something a little different with the Prima lace in the kit, so I gathered the edge to form it into lace flowers. The 7 gypsies key made a fun centre for one.

Love the Glitz Designs rub-ons in the kit. Lots of shapes. The dark colours are completely opaque, while the whites (instead of being completely transparent) are semi-opaque. I really like the look.

This blue paper is the back side of one of the American Crafts papers from the kit. The colour was exactly what I needed, but I didn't want a plain solid, so I embossed it with a Cuttlebug folder and sanded the embossing to show the white core. I also glimmer misted over the top.

Supplies (from Snobby Walrus May kit):
PP - Sassafrass Lass, Mark's Paper Company, 7 gypsies, American Crafts
letters - American Crafts, Cosmo Cricket
key - 7 gypsies
lace - Prima Marketing
rub-ons - Glitz Designs
glimmer mist - Tattered Angels
other - quote cut from vintage postcard, vintage stamp, buttons

Other supplies:
walnut ink - Tsukineko
ink - Ranger
other - twine

Fancy Jewelry

Here's the second layout that I created for Snobby Walrus Paper Crafts with their May kit. I think I'm in love with those 7 gypsies keys.

I like to tuck rub-ons in little corners. Sometimes that little bit extra is all that's needed.

I made these flowers with the beautiful mulberry paper from the kit. After I had the paper rolled up and glued, I brushed on the "Spring Rain" glimmer mist included in the kit. I used a paint brush to get the colour a little more intense, as this is one of the more subtle glimmer mists. The lace tied around the key was also dyed with the glimmer mist.

Since this page was about jewelry, I wanted to glitz up the title. Distress Stickles in "Rock Candy" did the trick. Just the right amount of glitter.

Another detail shot, showing some of the layers...

And the journaling that explains the title / picture:

Supplies (from Snobby Walrus May kit):
PP - Sassafrass Lass, My Mind's Eye, American Crafts, Cosmo Cricket
letters - American Crafts Thickers
word stickers - Cosmo Cricket
rub-ons - Glitz Designs
key - 7 gypsies
lace - Prima Marketing
glimmer mist - Tattered Angels
other - Mulberry paper, buttons

Other supplies:
distress stickles, ink - Ranger
marker - Staedtler Triplus Fineliner

First Egg Hunt

I'm happy to show you the first of my projects for Snobby Walrus Paper Crafts, using the May Kit. What a great mix of papers in this kit! I wouldn't normally gravitate towards Sassafrass Lass, but it works so well mixed with these other lines.

In this month's kit there were some vintage stamps. Such a fun little tidbit to include in embellishment clusters!

Pleating strips of paper is a technique that I seem to come back to time and again, and I think it's because I love the texture it adds to a page. And did you see those cute mini-letters from Cosmo Cricket? I love them - I think I'm twice as pleased with them simply because they are not all the same size, and the slight variations work so well with how I use letters.

I will be posting the rest of my projects over the next week - I hope you will come back to see them!

Supplies (from Snobby Walrus Paper Crafts May Kit):
PP - 7 gypsies, Sassafrass Lass, Mark's Paper Company
glimmer mist - Tattered Angels ("Spring Rain")
letters - American Crafts, Cosmo Cricket
flowers (large) - Prima Marketing
other - buttons, vintage stamps

Other supplies:
flowers (small), pearls - Prima Marketing
glimmer mist - Tattered Angels ("Tattered Leather")
ink - Ranger
